I've dug a trench about 18" deep. I put in my base aggregate which is 2A limestone. This material is considered road base. It has crushed stone ranging from dust, up to 1.5". It compacts well. I was able to install about 25% of the base wall units a couple weeks ago. Then, the weather turned to rain every other day for 2 weeks.

Ive always been using a varying depth of crushed stone, cr6 for all of our paver sub base installs. Topped with about an inch of sand for leveling purposes. There is a very successful company locally who I found out uses a #7 stone and thats it for a sub base. He still uses the sand to sweep in and lock the stones when everything is complete.
